And in honor of our little adventure (actually a total coincidence, but I’ll take it) have you heard about this project? I can’t be the only one who thinks this is pretty amazing.
Each day until January, a new chapter of Moby-Dick, read by the likes of Tilda Swinton and John Waters, will become available for download. Philip Hoare’s project aims to bring the classic to a whole new generation who might not even think to read about Captain Ahab and his whale (as evidenced by the growing number of folks who have not, myself included).
And to complete the body of work, each chapter is paired with a corresponding piece of art, created specifically for the Big Read.
You can learn more about the project and its purpose here, and if you have a chance, listen to this great feature on NPR (totally worth it, but I’m warning you, the story will make you want to start listening right now).
I’ve had a real hankering to read/re-read a few of my favorite classics lately, and this might be just the way to start.
What do you think? Will you devote the time to sit down and listen to Moby-Dick? Or would you rather crack the spine of the classic in the flesh?
As the summer quickly fades (stop already, August!) I find myself more and more in need of a really good backyard BBQ. Of course, Mark and I have only a little pittance of a back yard, so we might need to get creative, but never you mind… what I’m really craving is this…
These shots make me long for a potluck… good friends sharing their favorites. How come those aren’t as popular as they used to be? Just the word evokes images of June Cleaver dresses and JELL-O molds.
That’s right, with the big JELL-O letters those molds.
But maybe it’s time we brought it back. And not just the practice, but the word. Maybe it’s time we had a good old fashioned potluck.
Who’s in?
This napkin set, featuring correspondence written by the likes of Mark Twain and Emily Dickinson, would be the perfect addition to any registry.
Or maybe even an idea for a fun wedding day DIY?

Say what you will about the pop-up concept; I’ll be happy to defend. Because for each and every flop, there is a Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing just waiting to wow. The pop-up ideal (in which a restaurant quite literally pops up for a day, a week, or a few months at a time) allows chefs to unleash their creativity in a way that they never would in a traditional restaurant. If it works, the chef finds him or her self in a better position to launch their next venture… if it doesn’t, they don’t.
This particular pop-up, set in the old Capri space on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, is so loved that it has extended its original lease and is reportedly in search of a permanent home… all for good reason. The evening we spent strolling the beach, watching the eclipse, listening to one of the biggest drum circles I’ve ever seen (I kind of love Venice), and sampling our fair share of the menu above was easily one of my favorites on this trip… and pretty high on the list of ever.
I have been in love with Enjoy Cupcakes for some time now, so when it came time to book a baker for my wedding, I knew just who it would be.
Of course, all of that would make sense if I had already tried their cupcakes. But… I hadn’t.
Instead, I booked Enjoy based purely on their fantastic reputation and their even more fantastic personalities. It is impossible not to love Amber, Kevin, and their entire family from the first moment you speak.
(That adorable trailer may have also had a little bit of say in the matter.)
But oh my goodness… I had no idea what I was missing. I am seriously not kidding when I say that Enjoy makes *the best* cupcakes I’ve ever had. And I promise you I’m not saying that just because I’m biased. Those of you coming to the wedding won’t be disappointed.
Our tasting included all of the flavors in the picture above, but that is nowhere near the end of the list… and every. single. one. was delicious.
Now for the tough part. How do we choose?

This lovely little favor possibility, part of a 2010 cheese buffet spread by Sunday Suppers. Wouldn’t these be the most gorgeous little gifts?
You know how I love edible favors.

Of course, I can’t help but compile some of my favorite dress details before our trip this weekend.
I love a classic dress with an extra little detail. Some lace here, a ruffle there… the perfect touch that makes it stand out from the rest. These are a few of my favorites I’ve pinned over the past few months.
