{Real Weddings} Kelsey & Theron’s Hometown Heart

I love the holidays, but sometimes they can be hard.  I make it home to Oregon at least once a year, but I rarely make it for the holidays and I miss my beautiful coast.

This wedding, though…

This wedding is the perfect one to cheer me up.  I’m still in awe of the fact that, by total coincidence, it came across my desk… courtesy of the lovely Jamie Zanotti, who hails from my hometown!  I was so excited to see Jamie’s gorgeous pictures and reminisce about Coos Bay.  She is the sweetest, and Kelsey and Theron’s wedding could not be more perfect.  I just love the beautiful simplicity of the day… and that view of the North Bend bridge?  To die for.

Thank you so much for brightening my holidays, Jamie!  What an absolutely gorgeous celebration.

Here’s a little more about the day, straight from Jamie herself:

Kelsey hails from North Bend, Oregon but now lives on the East Coast.  She and Theron planned their wedding from afar, and it was to be a simple backyard affair… but Kelsey’s girlfriends wouldn’t hear of it.  They rallied together and created an elegant event.  When Kelsey’s plane came in, they took her down to the beach to collect sand and beach grass, which they paired with flowers from a gardener friend’s yard, and the results were gorgeous!  The original venue fell through, and family friends generously offered their property so the wedding would not have to be delayed.  Their home is nestled in the hills overlooking the historic North Bend Bridge (over Coos Bay), and matched with Kelsey’s girlfriends’ genius, the wedding was fabulous.

A Little Inspiration: Eclectic Autumn

Bouquet / Couple / Bridesmaids / Jam / Peach Galette / Baskets / Table

I love the fall… especially here on the east coast.  Something inside me feels immediately cozy at the mere thought.  Warm colors, warm food, and the warm company of family and friends as the holidays begin… the season is just the best.

The only problem is that, when it comes to design, the season can also become a little monotonous… there is almost a sense of obligation to plan with, and even wear, the colors of the leaves…which can only be attributed to the fact that the things really are damn inspiring.

But there are so many other options out there.  In my opinion, a fall wedding palette should feel warm… cozy.  Beyond that, I can’t imagine a single limitation that should be in place.  In fact, the farther from the norm the better, and I’m loving this peach and purple palette.  While a peach is anything but a fall fruit, the last of the summer peaches often linger well into September… and the color, well the color stays around all year.

{Real Weddings} Nikki & Benjamin’s DIY Lavender Love

Okay, yesterday, I swear to you, every single thing I read or watched just hit me straight to the bone… something was in the air.

One of those things was this oh so true post by Jonas Peterson…

If you read magazines and wedding blogs today, you’d think it’s all about the dress, the decorations, invitations or a million other things.

It’s not.

It’s about celebrating love, a manifestation of commitment, a gathering of friends and family.

Because you’re in love.

Jonas’ message needs to be said, and heard, again and again. It isn’t that the details aren’t important. They are. But what is really important… what really matters on the day is just, ever so simply… love. It is so easy to lose sight of that fact.

And I agree that the wedding industry often lends itself to the problem. How can it not? Blogs and magazines are there to provide inspiration for the details of the day… many are also there to provide much-needed advice. They (we? I’m not sure I’m worthy of “we” yet) serve their purpose and they do it well. I don’t know where I would be without my favorite blogs and magazines.

But it still stands to be said, and repeated again and again, as each wedding is planned, posted, or photographed…

Strip it back.

Peel the layers off.

And start again.

Look within… because what really matters, what will matter for years to come… is you. Your love. Not the food, not the timing of each and every second, not the very last detail… what matters is the person across from you… and the family and friends who are there for you.

It is so easy to lose sight.

Now, with all of that said, I have to admit that today’s wedding has its fair share of amazing details. The bride DIY’ed almost everything… from the flowers, to the centerpieces, to her own hair and makeup.

And although her mother couldn’t be there to witness the ceremony, having passed years ago, Nikki made sure her mother’s old sewing machine and a quilt she had made were incorporated into the decor in her honor.

Some details say it all.

Some photographs say it all.

There are so few days in life that bring a family together like a wedding… the time is precious.

Let the day be you.

And speaking of letting the day be you… can we just talk about how awesome this is…

A Little Inspiration: Fresh Fig and Lavender

You know, I’m not always the biggest fan of purple, but when it comes to this combination I just die.  I love the look and smell of lavender, and there is absolutely nothing bad about a fig… nothing.  I would take every little detail up there.

Carnival Inspiration Shoot

The Great Frederick Fair just recently left town and I’m already in mourning… it’s a little known fact that I spent a week out of nearly every summer of my childhood at the Coos County Fair as a proud 4-H’er and later, a rodeo queen (oh ya… that’s right).  To this day, nothing quite spells summer like the fair.  Caramel apples, kettle corn, scones (or elephant ears, whatevs), and those spinning rides I still don’t know how I stood as a kid.  The thought makes me so nostalgic.  It’s easy to see how someone might want to draw on some of that same nostalgia for their wedding… or maybe even their engagement party?  There is so much fun to be had!

Thank you so much to Eventity Inc and Iliana Morton Photography for sharing this fun shoot!

{Real Weddings} Erin & Graham’s Natural Love

Oh my gosh I am so excited to share today’s gorgeous wedding with you all.  There are so many adorable elements in this Osoyoos, BC affair, submitted via Two Bright Lights.

Old logs, feathers, candy… pie!!  (you know my serious love of pie)

And I just love all the things the couple did themselves.  Just wait until your see the unbelievable job Erin did DIYing her own bouquets!  Such an inspiration.  The couple’s love of all things natural, vintage, and so so pretty is showcased so well by the amazing work of their photographer,  Element Photography.

From the photographer:

Erin + Graham tied the knot on undoubtedly the hottest day of the summer! Their beautiful day started at Erin’s parents home where the girls gathered to dress and put on the final touches. Her parents’ home is charming and decorated with vintage treasures in every nook and cranny! Erin looked smashing in her ruffled gown and was oh so excited to get started with the day. But not as excited as Graham who showed up 30 min early for the first look… ooops! Erin walked down the driveway to meet her man and could hardly hold in the giggles as she snuck up on him. Sweet! Both of them smiling from ear to ear and exchanging compliments we snapped away as they enjoyed a very emotional moment together before their big day! Their wedding day was everything they could have asked for. The setting for the wedding ceremony was the Chobotar ranch in Osoyoos, BC. The warm, warm summer sun shone down on Erin + Graham as they exchanged vows and everyone cheered them on as they walked down the aisle as husband and wife. Erin is a creative, a planner and a tad bit OCD (she claims!). Her venue decorating was meticulous and she nailed every last detail. Most importantly the concept of the design reflected the couple, their relationship and their favorite things. Working with a tight budget Erin was resourceful and drew on their love of the outdoors and its natural beauty to decorate. Moss, old logs, stones, pinecones, feathers, wooden flowers – she even hand crafted the bouquets and boutonnieres herself! Right down to the antlers on the table – which doubled as noise makers to get the newlyweds to kiss – a shout out to their love of hunting. All the vintage finds were from her home decor or her mom’s, perfect!

{Real Weddings} Matt & Nicole’s Malibu Ranch Wedding

Happy Monday!  I hope everyone had a good weekend… I have a super fun wedding for you all this morning.  Not only did this couple have a gorgeous outdoor location and tons of cute details, I love how they took their photo booth to a whole new level with super cute costumes and masks… this looks like it was one great party!

From their photographer

There are a lot of things that I love about Matt and Nicole’s wedding. The outdoor ceremony was set against a lush green backdrop of trees and shrubbery; just perfect for them to profess their love and promises to each other. I love the use of DIY decor giving their wedding a more personal and charming touch. Their dessert station also boasted of various tempting treats. While she looked stunning in her Vera Wang gown, it was her exuberance that completed the look. It was indeed her day!

Thanks Carla!!
